| Name: | Calcifer |
|---|---|
| Website: | Paixao RPG |
Character: Calcifer
Series: Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Version: Book version
Age: several million years old
Gender: sort-of-male
Sexuality: asexual
Appearance: In his 'natural' state, Calcifer is a malleable ball of flame approximately the size of your average cozy fireplace. In this form, he can make an actual face and arms out of the flames as he chooses. His flames are primarily blue and violet with some green and orange thrown in. His face-flames are blue and pointy with sharp purple teeth, curly green hair, and violet pupils inside orange eyes.
Calcifer's humanoid manifestation (which is how he will be entering Paixao) is similar, only rendered in flesh and blood instead of flames. He appears as a thin little man with severe features: long, pointy nose, sharp-jutting chin, fairly thick, curly eyebrows under a mop of unruly (but short) curly hair. He has stick-arms and legs (not literally) with very bony knees and elbows, and long-fingered hands with the nails filed to a point. And, oh yes, blue skin and green hair, as well as sharp purple teeth. 8D The palms of his hands and the soles of his feet are purple.
Most memorable feature: Demonic smile that makes him look like Cheshire Cat’s long-lost cousin.
Odd fact: Though he is no longer a flaming ball of gas, Calcifer's body temperature is way higher than any human's. So high, in fact, that he will not be able to wear normal clothes and rainwater will probably hiss when it comes in contact with him.
Personality: Calcifer is a snarky pain in the ass. His main form of amusement is laughing at the misfortunes of others and then kicking them (most often verbally) when they’re down. He is devious and self-serving but has a secret weak spot for those less fortunate. Still he will make sure any situation has an advantage for him before getting involved in it. He is cranky and back-biting and enjoys verbally abusing those he loves best.
Abilities/Weaponry: Calcifer’s abilities are pretty much what you’d expect a genie’s to be. As a fallen star, he’s a huge power source of magic in and of himself, and he’s old enough to know just about everything there is to know about it.
His powers are limited however in that the bond he formed with Howl doesn’t allow him to do much magic on his own. All we really know from the books is that Calcifer’s power was less than that of a djinn. I think it’s fair to extrapolate, though, that he needs Howl to make decent use of his powers even after their contract is broken at the end of the first book.
So he’ll have a lot of magical knowledge but not be able to do anything huge (until he reunites with Howl). Simple spells only. Calcifer’s most-used powers on his own are probably going to be flight (which may or may not work in human form) and Pyromancy.
Weaknesses:
1) Water (which will fortunately not be able to 'put him out' in humanoid form).
2) The sad puppy eyes of starving orphans, etc.
3) Loud-mouthed old women who bully defenseless fire demons into doing their cooking.
History: Calcifer started his fictional career as a star whose time was up. But when he fell to earth to die, a young upstart wizard happened to be there to catch him. They made a contract: Howl would have access to Calcifer’s phenomenal cosmic powers in exchange for saving Calcifer’s life and keeping him in existence by giving the fire demon something to live on: his heart.
This arrangement worked well for magic, as Howl quickly became the best and most powerful wizard in the country, but badly for the two contract-ees. Without a heart, Howl led a completely blasé and dysfunctional life, and Calcifer was miserable as shit trapped in the hearth of Howl’s home as little more than a well-loved familiar.
The two of them were saved from a life of misery and a gradual decline into inhuman depravity when a saucy young woman under a curse that made her look 90 years old entered their home and made a contract with Calcifer: he would remove her curse if she broke his contract with Howl, thus freeing him. A novel later, this did happen (in its own way), and the three of them (along with Howl’s apprentice Michael) lived happily ever after.
This Calcifer comes from that happy time after the first book (but before the second book), when Howl has his heart back and has married Sophie, and Calcifer is a free demon who continues to live with his human friends.
